Meet Amanda

Amanda Bates, MSW, RSW

Registered Social Worker

Hi, I’m Amanda (she/her), a Registered Social Worker with both a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Social Work. I provide virtual counselling to adults across Ontario.

I support adults living with chronic illness, chronic pain, and disability, recognizing the many ways health challenges can affect life, including emotions, relationships, identity, capacity, and daily routines. In our work together, we can explore overwhelm, loss, and adjustment related to chronic pain, chronic illness, and disability while developing strategies that support coping and quality of life.

I also support adults navigating anxiety, depression, grief, pet loss, stress, caregiver fatigue, and other mental health concerns. Whether you are managing difficult emotions, facing loss, or working through life changes, you don’t have to go through it alone.

My interest in supporting people living with chronic illness, chronic pain, and disability is informed by academic study, professional experience, and lived experience with chronic illness and rural living. While every person's experience is unique, these experiences have deepened my understanding of how health challenges can affect all areas of a person's life, including relationships, identity, responsibilities, daily routines, and overall wellbeing.

My Approach

I take a collaborative, whole-person approach that is compassionate, non-judgmental, and grounded in evidence-based practices. Counselling moves at your pace and focuses on what matters most to you.

I recognize that mental health does not exist in isolation. Our physical health, environment, support systems, relationships, responsibilities, and life experiences can all impact emotional wellbeing. My approach is grounded in a person-in-environment perspective and adapted to your individual needs, capacity, and goals.

I believe counselling should adapt to the person, not the other way around.

What Counselling With Me May Look Like

  • A supportive space where you can show up as you are

  • Counselling that moves at a pace that respects your capacity and energy

  • Exploring emotions, stress, grief, adjustment, identity, and overwhelm

  • Practical coping strategies tailored to your life and needs

  • Support that recognizes the impact of chronic illness, pain, disability, caregiving, and life stressors

  • A collaborative approach focused on improving quality of life and emotional wellbeing

Accessibility Matters

I recognize that accessibility matters. Virtual and telephone counselling can help reduce barriers related to travel, pain, fatigue, mobility, chronic illness, weather, scheduling, and energy levels while allowing people to access support from the comfort and privacy of their own space.

Based in Timmins, Ontario, I provide virtual counselling to adults across Ontario and am committed to offering care that is inclusive, respectful, and grounded in understanding.
